Underground Magic: A Day at Indian Echo Caverns with My Tween Girls

Sometimes the best way to cool off in the summer is to go underground. On a sweltering hot day, I took my three tween girls to Indian Echo Caverns in Hummelstown, PA—and it turned out to be a surprisingly peaceful and awe-filled escape.

🪨 What Makes It a Living Cave?

Indian Echo Caverns is what’s known as a living cave—meaning water is still actively flowing through the rock, and the formations inside (like stalactites and stalagmites) are still growing, drip by drip. It takes hundreds of years to form even an inch of these delicate mineral structures. So when a guide says “don’t touch,” it’s not just a casual request—it’s actually against federal law. The oils on our skin can stop those formations from growing permanently.

That fact really hit home while walking through the winding chambers with their glistening surfaces. Everything looked untouched and preserved like a hidden world—and that’s exactly how it stays so beautiful. I made sure my girls understood how special it was and how important it is to protect it.

🧗‍♀️ What to Expect

There are 71 steps down to the cave entrance (and yes, you’ll walk back up them too!). A lot of people mentioned the stairs, but for us it wasn’t a big deal. Just something to know if you’re bringing someone who doesn’t love stairs. Once you’re inside, the temperature is cool and damp—around 52 degrees year-round—but I didn’t feel the need for a jacket this time. I brought them anyway, just in case, because I’ve frozen in caves before!

The tour is guided and informative, lasting about 45 minutes. My kids were old enough to follow along, and they really got into it. That said, if I had a toddler or a wiggly kid with impulse control issues, I probably would have skipped this. It’s not the place to let little ones roam free, and the “don’t touch anything” rule is serious.

✨ Final Thoughts

Indian Echo Caverns is one of those places that quietly stuns you. It’s not flashy or loud—but it’s deeply beautiful. And the rules (and even the physical challenges like stairs) kind of add to that sense of reverence. It forces you to slow down, be present, and appreciate something fragile and ancient.

If you’re looking for a different kind of day trip—something cool, quiet, and surprisingly meaningful—this one’s worth the drive. Especially with kids who are old enough to appreciate the wonder of the world beneath our feet.

Check out one of my newest website pages created in response to many requests from people I meet at Shady Maple (near my house) who want to know great ideas to fill the rest of their day while in town.

Applying for a mortgage? A clear paper trail can make all the difference.

Lenders look for consistency and transparency. Having organized documents—such as recent pay stubs, tax returns, and bank statements—can help prevent delays and keep your approval process on track.

I was asked the other day if I get kick backs from recommending a mortgage broker - the answer is NO…I get nothing but the peace of knowing I am able to easily work with the person. When the transaction is moving along at full speed, that is important! I recommend Shelly, and no we are not related!

Lancaster County Real Estate Update – Summer 2025

The local market is hot right now:

  • Median home price: ~$350,000 (up 5–7% from last year)

  • Homes are selling FAST – most go under contract in under a week

  • Many buyers are paying over asking price

  • Inventory is still tight, so competition is high

🔑 Bottom line: If you’re thinking of selling, it’s a great time. If you’re buying, be ready to move quickly and come in strong.
