Funny twist (or turn) on The Biannual Time-Change Confusion with a reverent honor of Lydia Hamilton Smith

Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center: A New Landmark in Lancaster

Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is set to honor two pivotal figures in American history with the upcoming Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy. Scheduled to open in early 2026, this interpretive museum and education center will explore the ongoing fight for freedom and equality in the U.S.
As a member of the Commercial and Industrial Council in Lancaster, I’ve had the opportunity to see updates on this center twice now. I’ll admit, I usually have a bad attitude toward museums—they can feel dry and repetitive—but this one is shaping up to be completely different. Instead of static displays, it’s designed to be highly interactive, incorporating modern screens and digital elements to bring history to life.
Why This Center Matters
The museum will be located in the historic residence and law office of Congressman Thaddeus Stevens and his confidante Lydia Hamilton Smith. Stevens was a fierce abolitionist and key architect of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, which abolished slavery, granted citizenship regardless of race, and protected voting rights. Smith, a businesswoman of African American and Irish descent, managed Stevens' household and played a behind-the-scenes role in the abolitionist movement, likely aiding the Underground Railroad. Their contributions are often underrated, and I find their lives absolutely fascinating.
Firsthand Look at the Progress
Most recently, I had the chance to have breakfast at the center and get an update on its progress. A few exhibits have already been installed, and while the project is coming together, it’s not likely to open to the public until next year. The hope is to align the opening with Thaddeus Stevens’ birthday—a fitting tribute to his lasting impact.
This center isn’t just about history—it’s about engaging with the past in a way that feels relevant today. With its interactive approach and modern twist, it’s shaping up to be a major addition to Lancaster’s cultural and historical landscape. I’m looking forward to seeing it completed!
Lydia Hamilton Smith: The Unsung Force Behind Thaddeus Stevens
On International Women’s Day, we celebrate the remarkable contributions of women throughout history—especially those whose stories often go untold. One such woman is Lydia Hamilton Smith, the housekeeper, confidante, and quiet powerhouse behind Thaddeus Stevens, the fierce abolitionist and congressman from Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
A Woman of Strength and Influence
Born in 1813 to a free Black mother and a white father, Lydia Hamilton Smith navigated a world where race and gender severely limited opportunities. Yet, through resilience and intelligence, she carved out a legacy of her own.
She became Thaddeus Stevens’ housekeeper in 1840, but their relationship was far more than employer and employee. She managed his household, handled business dealings, and even served as a liaison to powerful political figures. Many believe she played a key role in Stevens’ work to advance racial justice, as he was a fierce advocate for abolition, Reconstruction, and civil rights.
A Silent Force in the Fight for Equality
During the Civil War, Smith is believed to have aided the Underground Railroad, helping enslaved people escape to freedom. She and Stevens used their home on South Queen Street in Lancaster as a refuge, sheltering those seeking a new life in the North.
After Stevens’ death in 1868, Smith continued his work and built her own real estate business, purchasing several properties in Washington, D.C. and Lancaster—an incredible feat for a Black woman in the 19th century.
Why Her Story Matters Today
Lydia Hamilton Smith reminds us that women’s contributions to history often go unrecognized, but their impact is undeniable. She wasn’t just a housekeeper—she was a businesswoman, an activist, and an essential partner in the fight for justice.
On this International Women’s Day, let’s honor the Lydia Hamilton Smiths of the world—the women who work behind the scenes, break barriers, and leave a lasting mark on history.
Here’s to the women who make history, even when history forgets to write their names.

Springing Forward: The Biannual Time-Change Confusion
Ah, Daylight Saving Time—that delightful moment when we all pretend to be in control of time, only to be outwitted by our own household clocks. On March 9, 2025, we’ll be “springing forward” an hour, which means one less hour of sleep, a groggy Sunday morning, and the annual struggle of figuring out how to change the time in our cars.
The Great Clock Hierarchy
In modern times, we live in a world where some clocks are smarter than us, and some are just plain stubborn.
Your Phone: Ah yes, the MVP. It updates automatically. No work needed, no confusion—just seamless time transition like a futuristic dream.
Your Car Clock: The true test of patience. Did you ever figure out how to change it last year? If not, congratulations! Your car has now been an hour off for six months.
Your Microwave and Oven Clocks: They demand attention. Forget to change these, and you’ll be making dinner an hour late for weeks.
That One Wall Clock You Never Look At: It still says 4:13 from the last battery death. Is it even worth changing at this point?
Your Smartwatch: It updates automatically—unless you forgot to update its software, in which case, it’s anyone’s guess.
A Friendly Reminder: Change Those Batteries!
Since you’re already wandering around your house contemplating which clocks to change, take this as a sign to swap out the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. That annoying chirping at 3 AM doesn’t have to be a mystery in two months—get ahead of it now. And while you’re at it, maybe finally put a battery in that wall clock.
Survival Tips for the Time Change
Go to bed early… or at least pretend you will.
Set your coffee pot the night before—you’ll need the caffeine boost.
Don’t try to change your car clock while driving. Pull over unless you like testing your reaction time.
Prepare for confused pets. Your dog does not care about the time change; breakfast better still be on time.
So, as we stumble into yet another round of time-travel shenanigans, embrace the chaos, take a deep breath, and remember: we’ll do this all again in the fall, when we get to “fall back” and pretend we got a bonus hour of sleep.
Happy Daylight Saving Time! Don’t be late for work on Monday!
